18:52 - Movie night
The last movie I saw was the tom cruise time repeating movie on July 4th. Tonight I see Guardians of the Galaxy which I have heard great things about and have wanted to see.

The downside is I am not really in a movie place...I want to sleep.

15:06 - Social creature or creature of social
A few days into FB-less life...So far 3 people have noticed. baristababe, Kat, and Hein. Kat has been pleading with me to return because with Ian working she has no-one to talk to during the day and is bored. Hein tried to tag me at a gathering on Saturday which is why she discovered it. So I guess I am not really missed.

I have been spending more time doing work which is good. I practically ignore my phone now. (Maybe the FB phone wasn't such a bad idea after all). But I do miss seeing what is up with my friends and I do miss interacting with the people I did so with on there.

Moving into a social wasteland is a little odd after coming from FB. I don't feel as though I need to post something that will be interesting because very few will see it and if they find it dull it is not like it is taking up space on their feed.

So is it the validation I like? No.
Is it the "connection" with others? Partly...
I think it is mostly the distraction. I can leave for a few minutes..or get caught up something for hours. FB is the procrastinators godsend, and their nightmare.
I have had stints where I gave up FB at work...ultimately something draws me back in so given that I don't think this will be permanent...however being unplugged from the world is liberating and yet the fact no one misses me is humbling.

17:00 - A worthless app
One would think that with sich a vibrant active community in both windows phone app development and livejournal there would be a killer app for LJ on the windows phone. That said this thing is horrfic. No spell checking, or word completion. Tragic layout and unusable functionality. I bet the browser woild be better.

My admin walked about the office and gave out postcards to everyone in the office. On the front of the postcard is a "funny car" with smoking tires superimposed over the red and white stripes of Old Glory. There is a picture of "Fast" Jack Beckman bordered by stamp perforations. My job is to fill in the back with heartfelt words that will be read by our troops in Iraq. Not sure what to write really. I am sitting here in my padded chair in front of a computer drinking coffee from a local roasted coffee shop made with a French press. While they are over there potentially dying so that I can live this relatively posh life. I was curious if they would be insulted by the stereotypical race car on the front, I certainly don’t like funny car racing and I am sure they all don’t either. But I guess it is like getting a birthday card with flowers and butterflies on it, I don’t really care too much about either of them but I am happy about the card. I am thinking I am going to write something to the effect of “Thank you” and “Come back soon”.

08:41 - So much to do so little time
Lives are marked by many events. The day you are born, your first kiss, the first time you saw StarWars, first job, first camera, marriage, children. I have another one of these days coming up in the next week. It is not an event that upon reflection you realize was important, it is an in your face game changer. With events like this I always take stock of my life, thinking that this will be a mark in my timeline and I will remeber at what state my life was. As a result I allways try to acomplish stuff before the event. My todo list grows and grows. While writing this I realized that this is silly. When I think back all my other "marked" dates and times in my life I don't recall what silly project was left unfinished or not started I just remeber the event and some happy things that surrounded it.

So while I still want to finish some stuff up...I don't think I am going to stress out so much about it.

09:05 - Aniversary
I can see by the stock award email I just received that today is my anniversary working at MS. There is still one year left in that initial award so that means that it is my 4th year here. This has been the topic of much debate for me because I can never remember when I started here. So I went back to look it up. In Feb 2004 I was talking about my old job so I started in aught five for sure. I actually started as a contractor in June...I quit my old job because it was unpleasant. I was going to mooch off un-employment for the summer to decompress and ended up unintentionally getting a contract job at Microsoft. I was unemployed for only a couple of weeks. During that time I built my file server which is now defunct, started bird watching which has been put on hold and proposed to the love of my life. While searching around for my hire date I came across the following hidden post I made about proposing to Carol. I didn't even remember writing it, and don't recall the dream but I guess that is what journals are for.

08:03 - "I made a mistake, I screwed up"
Funny how those simple words make me love Obama even more. I remember a Bush v. Kerry town hall where one of the people asked what Bush mistakes bush had made during his first four years and what he had learned from them. The answer was him skirting around suggesting that his critics would say that Iraq was a mistake yadda yadda. When all was said and done Bush never admitted to making ANY mistakes. I loathed the man even more after that point. I always believed that our mistakes are what define us. More so the ability to recognize, acknowledge and learn from our mistakes. Here was the leader of our nation saying that he was perfect. I could have warmed up to the guy if he would have shown some notion that he wasn't a self-righteous pompous ass. He could have shown the world a human side. He could have made something up like "when I first moved into the white house the sink in Hoover room has the warm and cold reversed and I burned myself, but I learned and don't have that problem anymore." But instead he claimed to have never made a mistake. What is worse is that in the 8 years of his presidency I can't recall a time where he ever took responsibility for any screw-up. He must actually believe he was perfect. Now we are in the first month or the new administration and Obama has already admitted to a mistake. Unlike Bush he is human and makes mistakes. It is so nice to know that our President isn’t a cyborg.

I tend to go back to this article written 8 years ago before bush took office to see how accurate it is. It is amazing how such a joke turned out to be so real.

I had a peice of garbage between my bottom teeth. After I got it out I kept tounging at my teeth. Fast forward a day and the tip of my tounge is raw. Oops. Guess it is time for some sour-path kids.

I am going to re-finace my house because interest rates are so low now. Pretty exciting.

I got a new car last week.

My new role at work is looking good however there is no domain expert on the team and we are going to have to ramp up fast.

I havn't had time to ramp up because we had a short 2 week release planned on the product I have been working on. It is lame.

I have brewed a couple batches in the past month. Man beer prices are high.

Boring is me.

10:11 - Ammo for the comment spam
Whenever I make a post I end up getting several comments from bots that comment with garbage that I can't make sense of. Such is the price of allowing unrestricted comments.

Soooooo what is new. I spent last weekend sick and canning Pears. Carol and I got a little assembly line going and she helped alot. We plowed through about half of our pears and made Pear Jam, Sliced Pears in Light Syrup and Brandied Pears. We need to can the rest tonight or tomorrow or they will all be bad.

Big strides in the bathroom. I tore out the old shower with the help of carol. She sustained an injury that required 3 stitches at the local emergency room. I moved the showerhead into the tub, hung up the curtain and installed a shower caddy that I don't hate with every fiber of my being. So the only thing still left is the sink. I have a few coats of the SparVarnish but it is pretty toxic so finding time when I can kick Ella and Carol out of the house to throw on more coats it hard...particularly with the weather getting colder. I am about at the point where I just say it is good enough....ever time I look I see some little imperfection that requires another coat. Hopefully this weekend I can put in the sink.

Get er done!

Had my review at work and ended up leveling up which is sweet. I am now a SDE2 yay power and responsibility.

Time to go destroy Brian in Foozball.

So NBC had some coverage on their site about the singals used in beach volleyball to communicate with their partners. It is facinating and well documented:

Seriously this might not be safe for work....but it is put on by NBC so it is legit right.

08:14 - Bathroom update
No toliet since Friday. It goes back in today. Put in the tile floor it looks pretty good. Still need to do the pebble bathmat and re-cut and set the tile I broke. One of the spacers fell under the tile and in trying to figure out why it wouldn't go down I steped on the tile. Snap. Ouch. Next up is tile in the shower which should be easier than the floor although there are more tile. In parallel I have to finish the sink stand. If I can have the shower grouted the floor finished and the sink in place by the time I leave for boston on Friday it will be a good week.

13:39 - prairieflower's interview answers
1. How's your yard coming along?
Quite good actually the clover has sprouted up and is covering most all the places I wanted. There are a couple bare spots I will need to re-seed. Some weeds are poking up so I am going to have to start weeding untill it can crowd them out. It is pretty amazing though to see the backyard that used to be filled with dirt now full of green clover.

2. What do you like the most about your current job?
I like that it is a relitivly new group. I can feed my team helpfull things like test-driven development using unittest code reviews etc. Plus I really enjoy writing code. I get into slow spots where I loose focus but for th most part I remain pretty devoted and efficent and it.

3. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Costa-rica gets a ton of birds. It is probably pretty amazing.

4. What are the first five songs in your current playlist (iPod, CD player, whatever)
I listen to kexp.org pretty exclusivly.

5. What was the last fiction book you read?
Um.....I think it was the moon is a harsh mistress. Thanks seanb I need to get that back to you.
